They are absolutely stunning. There are 2 displays one at 9pm and an even bigger one at midnight, both 10-15 minutes, with a series of co-ordinated barges in the harbour, and up the rivers, as well as the bridge and the city buildings. No wonder it's one of the famous displays.
Yes the flooding (In many areas of Australia, not just Queensland, over the last couple of months) is heartbreaking. The poor farmers have gone straight from extreme droughts to this, with no time to financially recover. Very sad.
I used to be friends here with a woman who lives in that region. She is a retired ecological expert on marshlands and used to work for the local government. She is very better about what is happening. She warned them all ages ago about the changes that would come but was not listened to. I no longer have contact with her but I know that she herself doesn't live in the plain.
